ABOUT THE BOOK
The Suffering Tree
Release Date: June 13th 2017
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal
“It’s dark magic brings him back.”
Tori Burns and her family left D.C. for claustrophobic Chaptico, Maryland, after suddenly inheriting a house under mysterious circumstances. That inheritance puts her at odds with the entire town, especially Jesse Slaughter and his family-it’s their generations-old land the Burns have “stolen.” As the suspicious looks and muttered accusations of her neighbors build, so does the pressure inside her, and Tori returns to the pattern of self-harm that landed her in a hospital back in D.C. It all comes to a head one night when, to Tori’s shock, she witnesses a young man claw his way out of a grave under the gnarled oak in her new backyard.
Nathaniel Bishop may not understand what brought him back, but it’s clear to Tori that he hates the Slaughters for what they did to him centuries ago. Wary yet drawn to him by a shared sense of loss, she gives him shelter. But in the wake of his arrival comes a string of troubling events-including the disappearance of Jesse Slaughter’s cousin-that seem to point back to Nathaniel.
As Tori digs for the truth-and slowly begins to fall for Nathaniel-she uncovers something much darker in the tangled branches of the Slaughter family tree. In order to break the curse that binds Nathaniel there and discover the true nature of her inheritance, Tori must unravel the Slaughter family’s oldest and most guarded secrets. But the Slaughters want to keep them buried at any cost.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Author of NEARLY GONE, NEARLY FOUND, HOLDING SMOKE, and THE SUFFERING TREE (Disney*Hyperion, 2017). Represented by Sarah Davies of The Greenhouse Literary Agency.
As soon as I saw the cover for this book, I knew it was going to be creep-tastic. I love the premise of buried secrets, family scandals, and mysterious curses. Tori and her family receive a house and land for free, a strange but much needed act of kindness, after the death of Tori’s father. However, the elderly man who gave them the land and house in his will before he died left behind a family who is not happy with Tori’s family being on “their” land. The Slaughters are well known in the town, and they don’t like what they believe is theirs in the hands of someone else, someone not from their town. Yet, the Slaughters, as Tori will soon discover, have a long history of betrayal, cruelty, and more. It’s up to her and Nathaniel Bishop (who conveniently rises from the grave because of a curse, 300 years after the Slaughters murdered him) to right the wrongs of the past.
What I love most about this story, beyond the cool premise, is Tori’s family. Her, her mom, and her younger brother are all grieving from the loss of Tori’s dad, trying to adjust to a new home and town, and dealing with their own personal problems. I adore how naturally the family scenes are woven into the narrative, and I wish there had been more with Tori and Kyle because they have such a sweet relationship, even though they fight sometimes.
There were times the pacing felt a little stop-and-go-and-stop again, but overall, I was eager to figure out the answers to the big mysteries the whole way through. There are some nice, if a touch predictable twists, but all in all, Tori’s strong voice and characterization will keep you turning the pages.
Fans of dark mysteries, family drama, and hidden secrets should definitely give this one a try!
